Becoming a Volunteer: Before the start of each session anyone interested in volunteering must attend a mandatory orientation to receive training. Anyone interested in volunteering must be 14 years of age and older.

MRDA requires a commitment from a volunteer for 10 weeks to lead horses (leaders) or help support the riders (sidewalkers) .

LEADERS: under the direction of the instructors, you are responisible for the horse during the class. You are responsible for grooming and tacking prior to and after the lesson.

SIDE WALKERS: you support the rider during the class and help observe the rider's emotional state. Feedback to the instructor/ therapist during the class ensures that the best support, comfort and guidance are accomplished to help the rider. You must be able to have your arm at shoulder height for a period of time during class without discomfort.

Volunteers need to be physically able to walk/jog for approximately 60 minutes (with some stops along the way) in an indoor or outdoor arena.

Classes occur on Monday and Wednesday nights. There are two classes per night 6:15pm & 7:30pm. Each class is for one hour.

MRDA conducts a Provincial Child Abuse Registry Check for all volunteers at the start of each session. The form will be available at the orientation & at the first class. Two pieces of ID are required to fill out this form.

Please download the volunteer package and mail in the completed package to the office or bring it with you to the orientation.
